Recipe: State Fair Gizmo Sandwich

Combine Italian Sausage And Ground Venison Or Beef To Make This Delicious State Fair Gizmo Sandwich.

Ingredients (Makes 4-6 Sandwiches)

  • 1 lb. ground venison or beef
  • 1 lb. Italian venison sausage
  • 12 to 24 oz. pizza sauce (optional)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp. fennel seeds
  • 2 tbsp. Italian seasoning
  • 6 soft hoagie rolls

Directions

  • In a medium saucepan combine the pizza sauce and Italian seasoning over low heat.
  • Heat a large frying pan on medium low heat and add the fennel seeds. Cook until they become fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the Italian sausage and stir to combine with fennel.
  • Turn the heat up to medium high.
  • Add the ground beef or venison and ½ cup water. Stir to combine and sauté until browned and fully cooked (15 to 20 minutes). Drain off any excess liquid.
  • Cut the hoagie rolls lengthwise, to ¾ of the depth, being careful not to cut completely in half. Open the rolls and place on a baking sheet.
  • Adjust oven rack to 6 to 8 inches from top of oven and turn the oven to low broil. Spoon the meat mixture onto each roll (about ½ cup).
  • Spoon some more pizza sauce on top (optional).
  • Generously sprinkle shredded mozzarella on top of each sandwich.
  • Broil for about 3 to 4 minutes but watch them closely as ovens can vary.
  • When the cheese is melted and starting to color, remove from the oven.
